Your autumn holiday in the Ötztal · golden October at 820 m
Autumn in Oetz.
Golden larches, crystal-clear views and the valley almost to yourself.
When the larches glow in the Ötztal, Oetz shows perhaps its most beautiful side: the summer bustle is over, the peaks carry their first snow while the sun still warms the valley floor. Above the village the forests turn golden, the air grows crystal-clear — and the long-distance views are rarely as far as now.
Autumn is the calm, honest season in the valley: ideal for hiking, savouring and breathing deeply — often at lower prices than in high season. These are the five autumn classics in and around Oetz.

Golden October — autumn colours above Oetz
Hardly any season suits Oetz as well as autumn: the mixed forests on the sunny plateau glow in gold, orange and red, while the first snow lines trace the peaks above. As the air is especially clear now, the view from the village and the high trails reaches far down the valley. A stroll through the meadows above Oetz or the loop to Lake Piburg is enough to stand right in the blaze of colour.
- Sunny plateau at 820 m — long, mild autumn days
- Clear views across the whole valley
- A blaze of colour right from the doorstep

Larch gold — hiking through glowing forests
The larch is the secret star of the Ötztal autumn: the only conifer to turn a glowing golden-yellow before winter, bathing entire slopes in warm light. The Acherkogelbahn takes you comfortably up to Hochoetz, where the high trails wind through the coloured larch forests — down in the valley, the bright mixed woods line the Ötztaler Ache. Don't forget your camera.
- Acherkogelbahn up into the larch gold of Hochoetz
- Panorama trails with the first snowy backdrop
- Peak colour usually mid to late October

Cattle drive & Tyrolean farmers' autumn
In autumn the animals return from the high pastures to the valley — the cattle drive is one of Tyrol's finest traditions: decorated cows, brass music and the scent of fresh baking. Around Oetz and throughout the Ötztal, the return is celebrated with farmers' autumn festivals. To taste rural life, the surrounding farms offer fresh cheese, bacon and juices — the real flavour of the region.
- Cattle-drive festivals in the region (mostly September/October)
- Farm shops with cheese, bacon & juices
- Living Tyrolean tradition up close

Autumn hiking with the best views
Autumn is perhaps the best hiking season in the Ötztal: stable weather, pleasantly cool temperatures and views impossible in the summer haze. From the easy valley path by the river to airy high tours and the valley's famous suspension bridges, everything is possible — and the trails are wonderfully quiet now. Sturdy shoes, a warm layer for higher up, and off into the clear mountain air.
- Stable autumn weather & clear views
- Quiet trails away from the summer crowds
- Pack a warm layer for higher altitudes

Indulgence, spa & the quietest time in the valley
As the days grow shorter, the cosy side of autumn begins: a hike with a hut stop, an afternoon at the Aqua Dome thermal spa in Längenfeld (around 20 minutes up the valley) — and in the evening your own holiday apartment with a mountain view. Autumn is the quietest season in the Ötztal and often the best value: ideal for anyone seeking calm, nature and honest Tyrolean indulgence without the high-season bustle.
- Aqua Dome thermal spa about 20 minutes away
- Quietest & often best-value season
- Hut stops & Tyrolean cuisine
