Among skiers, Oetz holds an underrated trump card: the village sits at the entrance to the Ötztal — and thus at the centre of five fundamentally different ski areas. The local mountain Hochoetz starts at the gondola in the village, snow-sure Kühtai is barely half an hour away, and up the valley wait Sölden with its glaciers, refined Gurgl and the quiet mountaineering village of Vent. You can ski a different area every day — or fall in love with one and stay.
Best of all: the ski bus stops right outside our front door, the skis sleep in the heated ski room with boot warmers, and in the morning you are on the slopes before the day visitors. Hochoetz — the local mountain
Our local mountain — and one of the most family-friendly ski mountains in Tyrol. The Acherkogel cable car starts down in the village and sets you on the sunny high plateau at 2,020 m: wide, perfectly groomed pistes where children have room to learn and parents room to enjoy. In the Kinderland with its magic carpet the ski schools take over the little ones, mascot Widi included — and at lunchtime you meet at the panorama restaurant or on the terrace of the Bielefelder Hütte. The ski bus to the valley station stops right outside our front door; no packing the car, no parking stress, and after the last run you are home within minutes.

Kühtai — Austria's highest ski village
At 2,020 m, Kühtai is the highest ski village in Austria — and you feel it in the snow: from December until April there is reliable natural snow here while meadows show through elsewhere. The lifts start right at the pass road, the runs are a notch sportier than in Hochoetz and pleasantly empty. Best of all: Hochoetz and Kühtai share one ski pass — together the ski region comes to around 80 piste kilometres, linked by the shared mountain world around the Wetterkreuzkogel. From Oetz you are up there via Ochsengarten in barely half an hour.

Sölden — the heavyweight
If you want a big ski area, head up the valley: with 144 piste kilometres, two glaciers and the three "BIG3" viewing platforms above 3,000 m, Sölden is the sporting heavyweight of the Ötztal. On the Gaislachkogl (3,058 m) sits the summit restaurant ice Q with the James Bond experience 007 Elements, and on the Rettenbach and Tiefenbach glaciers the season starts in autumn and runs until May. Add the legendary après-ski — Sölden can do quiet cruising days, but it can also do loud. For experts, mileage collectors and anyone who wants to stand at 3,340 m once in their life, it is THE day trip.

Gurgl — the diamond of the Alps
At the very end of the valley, where the road to the Timmelsjoch begins, lies Gurgl — the "diamond of the Alps". Obergurgl and Hochgurgl share around 110 piste kilometres between 1,800 and 3,080 m: high alpine, extremely snow-sure and wonderfully unhurried. There are no crowds at the lifts, the clientele is refined, and the pistes stay grippy well into the afternoon. Since the Ski World Cup started stopping in Gurgl in November, the village is known internationally too — yet it has kept its calm character. Our tip for the day out: the viewing platform on the Wurmkogl at 3,080 m and the Top Mountain Crosspoint motorcycle museum on the Timmelsjoch road.

Vent — the quiet insider tip
At the end of the Venter valley, at 1,890 m, lies the mountaineering village of Vent: four lifts, around 15 piste kilometres — and that is precisely its magic. There are no queues, no rush and family-friendly prices, but empty, snow-sure slopes beneath the Ötztal three-thousanders. For children, returners and everyone who still understands skiing as a quiet mountain day, Vent is a gift. Ski tourers know the village anyway: this is where the great ski tours towards the Wildspitze, Tyrol's highest mountain, begin. The drive is worth it as a day trip with a hut stop — or as the counterpoint to big Sölden.

How you live while skiing in Oetz
Ski bus at the door
The stop is right outside the Urlaubsplatzl — hop on, ride to the Acherkogel cable car, go skiing. The car gets a holiday too.
Heated ski room
Skis and boards sleep in the in-house ski room with boot warmers — warm, dry boots in the morning. With children, that is half the battle.

Can you ski directly in Oetz?
Yes — the Acherkogel cable car starts right in Oetz and takes you to the Hochoetz ski area at 2,020 m within minutes. The ski bus to the valley station stops right outside the Urlaubsplatzl's front door, so you do not even have to pack the car.
Which ski area near Oetz is best for families?
Hochoetz — Oetz's local mountain is considered one of the most family-friendly ski areas in Tyrol: sunny, wide pistes, its own Kinderland with magic carpet, ski schools and mascot Widi. How far is it from Oetz to Sölden for skiing?
Around 40 kilometres up the valley — a good 35 minutes by car on the Ötztal road. In return, Sölden offers 144 piste kilometres, two glaciers and runs up to 3,340 m; the season there lasts until May.
Is the Ötztal Super Ski Pass worth it?
If you stay several ski days and want to mix the areas, the Ötztal Super Ski Pass is your best bet: it is valid in all ski areas of the valley — Sölden including its glaciers, Gurgl, Hochoetz and Kühtai, Vent and Niederthai. For a pure Hochoetz holiday, the cheaper Hochoetz–Kühtai regional pass is enough.

Exceptionally snow-sure: Kühtai at 2,020 m is the highest ski village in Austria, Gurgl lies between 1,800 and 3,080 m, and Sölden's two glaciers reach up to 3,340 m. Depending on the area, the season runs from late November until April — considerably longer on the glacier.
How do you get from Oetz to the ski areas without a car?
To Hochoetz it could not be easier: the ski bus stops outside the Urlaubsplatzl's front door and takes you to the Acherkogel cable car.
