Oetz sits at the entrance to the Ötztal at 820 metres — arguably the most convenient address for a winter holiday in the valley. The family ski area of Hochoetz lies directly above the village, the Acherkogelbahn cable car starts in the village itself, and the ski bus stops outside the front door of Urlaubsplatzl. You need not touch the car all week if you would rather not.
If you want more, it is not far: with the Ötztal Super Skipass, from three days onwards six ski areas are open to you — over 350 kilometres of pistes and 90 lifts in total, from Hochoetz and Kühtai via Sölden and Gurgl through to quiet Vent.
Skiing in Hochoetz — the ski area on the doorstep
The Acherkogelbahn starts in the middle of Oetz and takes you up into the sunny family ski area of Hochoetz: 41 kilometres of pistes between roughly 1,400 and 2,270 metres, split into 12 km easy, 21.5 km intermediate and 4 km difficult runs, plus 3.5 km of open routes. Fifteen lifts, 100 % snowmaking coverage.
The terrain is wide, sunny and easy to read — exactly what makes for a relaxed day on skis. If you like it sporty, take the long valley run down to Ochsengarten or the permanent race course with timing. And if you still have something left at the end of the day, ski the valley run all the way down to Oetz instead of taking the gondola.
In the 2026/27 season the lifts run from 4 December to 11 April, daily from 8:45 to 16:30.

One ski pass, six ski areas — what the valley offers
Hochoetz and Kühtai share the same ski pass: 90 kilometres of pistes and 27 lifts between them. Kühtai sits at 2,020 metres, which makes it one of the most snow-sure places in Tyrol — around 25 minutes by car from Oetz, ideal for the day when it is too warm or too grey down in the valley.
From three days onwards the Ötztal Super Skipass pays off: it covers six ski areas in the valley — Hochoetz-Kühtai, Sölden, Gurgl, Vent, Niederthai and Gries — over 350 kilometres of pistes and 90 lifts in total. From six days it also includes admission to the 007 ELEMENTS James Bond installation and the Top Mountain Motorcycle Museum.
Our honest advice: only take the Super Skipass if you genuinely intend to head up the valley. If you plan a relaxed week in Hochoetz and Kühtai, the smaller pass is better value — and you will still be first at the gondola in the morning.

Ski bus, getting here & equipment — the logistics
The ski bus stops right outside our front door, roughly every half hour — and with the guest card you receive from us you travel free of charge. That is the real luxury of Oetz: put your ski boots on in the apartment, walk around the corner, get on. We leave the current timetable in your apartment, and it is in the digital guest folder too.
By car you come via the Inntal motorway and the Ötztal road; winter tyres are compulsory in Austria during the cold season, but you will rarely need snow chains for Oetz itself. Without a car it works just as well: take the train to Ötztal station and the bus from there into the village.
For skis and snowboards we recommend the Feelfree ski school — our tip in the village, with rental and ski school right in the ski area. Your own equipment goes into the ski room in the house: with boot heaters, so you do not start the morning in cold boots.

When to come
December up to Christmas: quiet, atmospheric, often still good value — but the days are short and not every piste is open. If you like Advent, you get a very peaceful version of it here.
Christmas and New Year: the most expensive and busiest time in the valley. Lovely if you want the atmosphere — but book early, this is the first period that fills up with us.
January after the holidays: our favourite. Best snow conditions, empty pistes, moderate prices. If you are not tied to school holidays, these are the weeks to come.
February: holiday season across much of Europe and correspondingly busy — but longer days and reliable snow. March and April: spring skiing. Soft afternoon snow, lunch on the terrace, and up in Kühtai the snow lasts until the season ends on 11 April.

A winter holiday with children
Hochoetz is a family mountain and you notice it everywhere. In Widi's Kinderland at the top station the little ones learn their first turns with the local ski schools — magic carpet, mascot Widi and plenty of patience. The pistes around it are wide and gentle enough that nobody gets frightened.
The best part for parents: with the Hochoetz-Kühtai ski pass, children under 8 (born 2018 or later) ski free of charge when accompanied by a parent.
For the afternoon, when legs are tired: the toboggan run to Piburg — a short climb, wide eyes. And our larger apartments Charmy and 360 have enough room that ski gear and children are not permanently in each other's way.

Cross-country skiing in the Ötztal — 143 km of trails
The Ötztal is a cross-country region that is easy to underestimate: 143 kilometres of trails run through the valley, tracked for classic and groomed for skating, from a flat practice loop to snow-sure high-altitude trails.
The nearest trail for you is the Ochsengarten loop: 5.2 kilometres at 1,524 to 1,610 metres, graded easy and prepared for both techniques. It sits high enough that the snow holds when the valley floor is already thawing. Entry points include the one by the school and by the Balbach lift.
If you want more kilometres in one go, head up the valley: between Umhausen and Obergurgl the trails link up over long stretches.

Tobogganing — fast runs, big smiles
The toboggan run you can reach on foot is the one to Piburg: 1.2 kilometres, around 20 minutes uphill, traffic-free — and floodlit every day. That makes it the perfect end to a day when your ski legs are already tired. Sledges can be hired on the spot at Hotel Seerose or the inn by Lake Piburg.
If you want the longer version, drive to Ochsengarten: 2.2 kilometres down from the Feldringalm, a good hour's climb, also traffic-free, with sledge rental at the mountain inn itself. The walk up is the price of the stop at the hut — and it is worth paying.
And for the one big day out: in Sölden a toboggan run drops 7.3 kilometres from the Gaislachkogl mid-station into the valley — one of the longest in Austria.

Ice skating on Lake Piburg — gliding on natural ice
When Lake Piburg at 913 metres freezes over, one of Tyrol's most atmospheric natural ice rinks appears: a roughly two-kilometre stretch of dark ice, snowy forest all around — and above it all the Acherkogel at 3,007 metres.
The best part: using it is free of charge. Skates can be hired at the inn right by the lake, so you need not even bring your own. If you would rather not skate, walk across the ice instead — that is allowed too, and an experience in its own right.
One thing we mean seriously: whether the ice is safe is decided by the municipality alone, and clearance depends on the weather. In mild winters the lake stays closed. Just ask us — we know how things currently stand.

Winter hiking & snowshoeing — the quiet side
The most popular winter walk in the lower Ötztal starts right in the village: from Oetz on cleared paths up to Lake Piburg and back down the other side — around seven kilometres, with the Ötztaler Ache, waterfalls, rock faces and the lake as the highlight. For us the finest loop you can walk without any special equipment.
Up in Hochoetz there is also a dedicated network of marked and secured snowshoe routes alongside the pistes — a rarity, as most ski areas leave this to chance. If you prefer to earn your turns, there is plenty of ski touring terrain all around.

A winter holiday with your dog
All five apartments are dog-friendly, and for many dogs winter is the finest season here: the cleared winter walking paths around Oetz and up to Lake Piburg are easy going with a dog, and in the snow among the larches there is room for whatever a dog has in mind.
What does not work: pistes and cross-country trails are off limits for dogs — for good reason, on both sides. And claws have no business on the natural ice at Lake Piburg.
One practical advantage here: after a round in the snow your dog comes straight into the apartment through the entrance, without having to cross a hotel lobby. We have towels for wet paws.

The rest day — when the snow takes a break
Not every day of a winter holiday has to end on the piste. The classic rest day is the Aqua Dome in Längenfeld, around 20 minutes by car up the valley: 12 pools across 22,000 square metres, thermal water between 34 and 36 degrees, plus seven saunas. Lying outdoors in a steaming bowl while snow falls above you explains quickly enough why it gets busy.
Closer and free of charge: a walk through the village, an afternoon on the floodlit toboggan slope, or simply doing nothing. Our apartments have smart TVs with Netflix and Prime and 550 Mbit Wi-Fi — on some days that is exactly the right plan.
And when the fog sits in the valley: go up. Above 1,500 metres the sun is often shining in entirely different weather.
