A good half hour on foot above the village lies Lake Piburg, a dark-green forest lake that ranks among the warmest bathing lakes in Tyrol: in high summer the water reaches up to 24 degrees. Add the outdoor pool right in Oetz for an easy afternoon, cool spots along the Ötztaler Ache river — and for rainy days the Aqua Dome thermal spa, twenty minutes up the valley by car.

Lake Piburg — a swimming day in a natural gem
The lake is a protected natural monument and that is exactly how it feels: dark, soft water, forest right down to the shore, the Acherkogel behind you. For swimming there are lawns and a bathing jetty, and in season a buffet and boat hire depending on what is open. Because the water warms up quickly in this sheltered basin, the lake is often already pleasantly warm when other mountain lakes still make your teeth chatter. Our host's tip: come in the morning or from late afternoon — then the jetty and the lawn are almost yours alone.

Getting there & the loop trail around the lake
The finest route is the forest path from Oetz: around 30 to 40 minutes uphill in the shade, with the water waiting as your reward at the top. With a pushchair or tired legs, take the road towards Piburg — from the hamlet's car park it is only a few steps to the shore. If you want to see more, walk the loop trail around the lake: a good hour, mostly level and shaded, with benches and ever-changing views across the water. In autumn, when the mountain forest is mirrored in the lake, the loop is almost lovelier than in high summer.

Pool, river & the rainy-day alternatives
Not every swimming day needs a mountain lake. The outdoor pool in Oetz sits right in the village and is the easy option for an afternoon — especially with children who prefer a pool to a natural shore. Along the Ötztaler Ache you can cool your feet at quiet spots on the bank (the glacier-fed river is far too wild and too cold for swimming). And if the weather does not play along: the Aqua Dome thermal spa in Längenfeld is about 20 minutes away by car, and AREA 47 with its water world sits at the mouth of the valley — the action alternative for older kids and teenagers.

How do you get from Oetz to Lake Piburg?
On foot along the shady forest path from Oetz in around 30 to 40 minutes — with a pushchair you are better off taking the road towards Piburg. By car you reach the car park in Piburg within a few minutes, and from there it is only a few steps to the shore.
Can you walk around Lake Piburg?
Yes — the loop trail around the lake takes about an hour at an easy pace, runs mostly through shady forest and keeps opening up views across the water to the Acherkogel. It is pleasant even on hot days and a play of colours in autumn.
Is Lake Piburg suitable for children?
Families love the lake — with lawns, a bathing jetty and warm water. It is, however, a natural lake without continuous lifeguard supervision: parents keep an eye on their own children at and in the water.
