Oetz sits at the entrance to the Ötztal at 820 metres, on a sunny plateau above the river — arguably the most convenient address in the whole valley in summer. The Acherkogelbahn cable car starts in the middle of the village, Lake Piburg is within walking distance, and the hiking trails begin practically at our front door. You can leave the car parked all week if you like.
Lake Piburg is the asset Oetz is rightly proud of: water temperatures of up to 24 degrees and protected as a natural monument since 1929 — one of the warmest bathing lakes in the Alps, with no motorboats and no crowds.
Hiking — from valley strolls to summit tours
Around Oetz, hiking starts right outside the door — and we mean that literally. The most relaxed loop runs level through the valley to little Lake Habichen (around 6 km, barely any climbing), the finest one up to Lake Piburg and back along the forest path. If you want drama, walk the short loop to the Achstürze: viewing platforms directly above the whitewater stretch of the Ötztaler Ache.
The Acherkogelbahn takes you higher: from the top station at 2,020 metres, panorama paths and alpine-pasture loops lead away, and the Wetterkreuz rewards you with a 360-degree view. Worth planning around: the high routes are only free of snow from June or July.

Lake Piburg — one of Tyrol's warmest swimming lakes
Nestled between forest and rock, Lake Piburg lies at 913 metres just above Oetz. In high summer the water warms to up to 24 degrees, making it one of the warmest bathing lakes in Tyrol. There is a reason it stays that way: the lake has been a natural monument since 1929 and belongs to the Achstürze–Piburger See landscape conservation area. There are no motorboats here.
It is smaller than most people expect: around 800 metres long, 240 metres wide, up to 25 metres deep, with a shoreline of about 1.9 kilometres. The loop takes a leisurely 45 minutes — a pleasure barefoot in summer. On the shore you will find lawns, a bathing jetty and a seasonal buffet, and rowing boats can be hired.
On foot you are up there in 30 to 40 minutes from Urlaubsplatzl via the shady forest path. With a pushchair, take the road towards Piburg instead. And an honest tip: in the late afternoon, once the day visitors have left, the lake is practically yours.

Acherkogelbahn & Widiversum — the mountain for everyone
The Acherkogelbahn is the reason Oetz works even with tired legs: it starts in the middle of the village and takes you up to 2,020 metres in Hochoetz within minutes. In summer 2026 it runs from 4 June to 18 October, daily from 9:00 to 16:15, with the last descent at 16:30.
At the top waits the WIDIVERSUM — honestly more than the name suggests: 36 play stations around Widi the mountain sheep, easy themed trails, a bistro and the 5D cinema “WIDI's Movieshuttle”. Admission is free; you only pay for the cable car.
For adults without children in tow the trip is still worth it: from the panorama restaurant at the top station the view runs across half the valley, and the alpine-pasture loops start right outside the door.

Ninja Park Hochoetz — a floating course at 2,000 m
This is the attraction some guests travel here specifically for: on the reservoir in Hochoetz, at over 2,000 metres, 28 obstacles hang above the water like a low ropes course. Climb, balance, jump — and if you misstep, you land in the lake. That is rather the point.
The obstacles are colour-graded like pistes: 12 easy, 11 intermediate and 5 genuinely tough. So you decide for yourself how much you want to suffer. The wetsuit, incidentally, is not decorative — the water at 2,000 metres is bracing.
Getting there is the same trip as to the Widiversum: up with the Acherkogelbahn, then a few minutes on foot.

AREA 47 — Austria's largest outdoor park
At the entrance to the Ötztal, around 15 minutes by car from Urlaubsplatzl, lies AREA 47: at 9.5 hectares, Austria's largest outdoor adventure park. The centrepiece is the Water Area with diving towers, giant slides, blobbing and a lake to jump into — plus climbing and bouldering, a wake area and beaches.
The guided tours into the valley also start here: rafting, canyoning and caving. So if you are planning the adrenaline day, book both at once — park and tour in the same place.
A tip from experience: on hot summer weekends AREA 47 gets busy. If you prefer it quieter, come midweek — or head to Lake Piburg instead.

Rafting & canyoning on the Ötztaler Ache
The Ötztaler Ache is one of the best-known white-water rivers in the Alps — and Oetz sits right on it. How wild it gets is up to you: there are gentle beginner trips that families with children can join, and there are stretches where you genuinely have to work.
You can see how serious the Ache gets while staying dry, and for free, at the Achstürze below Oetz: viewing platforms lead directly above the whitewater. A good outing for anyone who would rather watch than paddle.
Equipment — wetsuit, helmet, buoyancy aid — is provided in full by the operators. You need swimwear and a towel, nothing more.

Mountain biking — freedom on two wheels
The Ötztal cycle path runs straight through the valley along the river — flat, well built and therefore manageable with children or on an ordinary bike. Downstream the Inntal cycle path takes you all the way to Innsbruck; upstream it heads towards Sölden.
If you are after the climbing, you will find alpine trails and forest roads with panoramic views around Hochoetz; further up the valley the Bike Republic Sölden offers signposted lines for every level. E-bikes can be hired nearby — on the long ascents, an honest recommendation.

Days out in the valley — Stuibenfall, Ötzi village & rainy days
The Stuibenfall near Umhausen is, at 159 metres, the highest waterfall in Tyrol — and closer than you might think. The loop leads past the roaring water over 700 steps and a suspension bridge; doing the whole thing takes a good two hours. Sturdy footwear and a willingness to get wet are part of the deal.
Right next to it lies the Ötzi village, an archaeological open-air park about life in the Neolithic. A direct hit with children, and perfectly visitable in mixed weather with a rain jacket.
When it really pours: the Aqua Dome in Längenfeld is around 20 minutes up the valley by car, and Innsbruck with its old town and alpine zoo is about 45 minutes away.

A summer holiday with your dog
All five apartments are dog-friendly, and in summer there is plenty of room to roam: shady forest paths, the loop at Lake Habichen, streams to cool off in and pasture tracks where you will not meet anyone for hours.
Two things worth knowing. At Lake Piburg nature-reserve rules apply — dogs stay on the lead, and swimming is not permitted everywhere. And on pastures with grazing cattle the dog belongs on a short lead; with mother cows and calves, give them a wide berth.
In the house it is straightforward: your dog comes into the apartment through the entrance, no hotel lobby involved. We have towels for wet paws.

When to come
June: our insider tip. The valley paths have long been clear, Lake Piburg is warming up, everything is in bloom — and it is noticeably cheaper and emptier than August. You just have to hold off on the high tours; there can still be snow up top.
July and August: peak season. The lake is at temperature, every lift is running, anything is possible — but it is busier and pricier. If you come then: book early, and plan AREA 47 for a weekday.
September: for many the finest time of all. Warm days, cool nights, clear long views, empty trails — and the lake often holds its warmth well into the month. The cable car runs until 18 October.
